As cities face the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, they must begin to rebuild and restore local economies, address social injustice and inequity, advance climate goals, and deliver vital services to residents in new and better ways. With carefully curated content, CityLab 2021 will provide ambitious city leaders with the latest expert thinking, first-hand lessons from their peers, and tested innovative solutions to tackle these challenges head-on. While CityLab events typically consist of three jam-packed days of in-person scheduling, this year’s virtual event will take place at interludes over a three-day period, with specific moments designed for various city innovation audiences. Two afternoons of must-see city debate and plenary will take place on Monday and Tuesday, March 1 and 2 from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM ET. Additional details may be found here.
A one-on-one interview with Dr. David Kessler, Chief Scientific Advisor of the Biden Administration’s COVID response team, and PBS Newshour anchor Judy Woodruff will follow, addressing the logistics of vaccine distribution and how the federal government is coordinating with local and state entities.
Programming over the three days will also include Muriel Bowser, the Mayor of Washington, D.C., sitting down for an interview with Tiffany Cross of MSNBC to explore whether her city should become the 51st state; Dr. Vivek Murthy, who has been nominated to serve as U.S. Surgeon General, headlines a panel to explore how rebuilding trust in America’s institutions could accelerate local recoveries; and Ibram X Kendi, author of How to be an Anti-Racist, will spark a conversation with Mayor Chokwe Lumumba of Jackson, MS, and Urban American City Founder Toni Griffin on how to build more just cities.
Appearing in a mayors-only session focused on innovation is Mariana Mazzucato, Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London, Founding Director of the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose, and author of Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism.
The four city co-hosts from four continents, Mayors London Breed of San Francisco, Claudia Lopez of Bogota, Yvonne Aki- Sawyerr of Freetown, and Jan Vapaavuori of Helsinki, will also address the gathering of leaders.
