Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced several artists participating in the city’s first biennial along the Los Angeles River. The biennial seeks to call attention to water and sustainability as well as act as a cultural experience for visitors. The biennial, titled, Current:LA Water was chosen as one of four grantees in Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Public Art Challenge, which provides funding of up to $1 million for public art and aims to demonstrate the power of culture to advance civic priorities.

Spartanburg City Council on Monday night approved design concepts for a $1M public art project that will light up neighborhoods later this year. The funding is provided by Bloomberg Philanthropies. In 2015, the City of Spartanburg was selected as one of four cities nationwide to take part in Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge, a new program to support temporary public art projects that celebrate creativity, enhance urban identity, encourage public-private partnerships, and drive economic development.

Mayors Kathy Sheehan (Albany), Gary McCarthy (Schenectady), and Patrick Madden (Troy) gathered at the rehabilitated former St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church on Eastern Avenue in Schenectady to announce a full list of neighborhood engagement activities for the Breathing Lights temporary public art project – and call for submissions to a new, local arts competition. Breathing Lights, winner of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge, will illuminate hundreds of vacant buildings in Albany, Schenectady and Troy nightly in October and November 2016.

ArtHouse: A Social Kitchen is pleased to announce that six individual artists and teams have been selected to submit full proposals for temporary, original, site-‐responsive public artworks for ArtHouse. The ArtHouse project will transform a 15,000 square foot facility in downtown Gary into a cultural hub showcasing culinary and visual arts. The City of Gary will use this public space to help spur artistic and economic activity and to promote ethical redevelopment of the downtown district.

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced the grantees selected to participate in the foundation’s $30 million Arts Innovation and Management (AIM) program for small and midsize nonprofit cultural institutions in six U.S. cities, including Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The invitation-only program, announced in April 2015, supports a diverse set of institutions including local cultural centers and performing, literary and visual art organizations that present music, film, dance, poetry and other art forms.

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced 12 finalist cities in the running to receive up to $1 million each as part of the Public Art Challenge, a new program aimed at supporting temporary public art projects that engage communities, enhance creativity, and enrich the vibrancy of cities. Bloomberg Philanthropies invited mayors of U.S. cities with 30,000 residents or more to submit proposals for innovative temporary public art projects that address a civic issue, and demonstrate close collaboration between artists or arts organizations and city government. More than 230 cities submitted proposals for consideration in the Public Art Challenge, representing 68 million residents across the United States.
