Bloomberg Philanthropies Launches 2013-2014 Mayors Challenge in Europe

Michael R. Bloomberg today announced the launch of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ 2013-2014 Mayors Challenge, a competition to inspire European cities to come up with bold ideas that solve major problems and improve city life – and that ultimately can be shared with other cities. Modeled on a successful inaugural competition in the United States, the Mayors Challenge (bloomberg.org/mayorschallenge) will award €5 million for the grand prize winner and €1 million for four additional cities that come up with the boldest and most transferable ideas.

Bloomberg Philanthropies-Funded Report on Global Tobacco Epidemic Released By World Health Organization

The results of a Bloomberg Philanthropies-funded global tobacco control report released today by the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that 2.3 billion people are covered by at least one effective tobacco control measure, an increase from the 1 billion covered in 2008. The report measures country-level adoption of the MPOWER policies that are proven to lower tobacco use including: Monitoring tobacco use and prevention policies; Protecting people from tobacco smoke with smoke-free air legislation; Offering help to quit tobacco use; Warning about the dangers of tobacco with pack labels and mass media, Enforcing bans on tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship; and Raising taxes on tobacco.

Bloomberg Philanthropies Expands Arts Engagement Initiative to Enhance Visitor Experiences Through Mobile Platforms

Bloomberg Philanthropies today announced the expansion of the Bloomberg Arts Engagement Initiative that provides support for mobile technology intended to increase access to the arts and enhance visitor experiences through technology. Five cultural institutions will receive a new $15 million commitment beginning in June 2013. Traditional audio guides–which have long been the default method of connecting museum-goers with exhibits–will be replaced by state-of-the art mobile guides that take advantage of cutting edge technologies like GPS and 3D imaging.

Global Adult Tobacco Survey Funded By Bloomberg Philanthropies Shows 1.2 Million Fewer Smokers in Turkey

The Government of Turkey today announced the results of the 2012 Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, which shows significant declines in tobacco use among adults in the country. Turkey is a global leader in the implementation of MPOWER leading to 1.2 million fewer adult smokers in Turkey. The 2012 survey found 14.8 million Turkish adult tobacco users, a decline from 16 million in the 2008 survey.

Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use Awards 500 Grants Since 2007

Bloomberg Philanthropies today announced that the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use Grants Program has awarded 500 grants since 2007. The Bloomberg Initiative Grants Program was designed to provide direct funding to governments and non-government organizations located in low- and middle-income countries to support development and implementation of evidence-based tobacco control activities. Since inception, the program has distributed $100 million in grants to more than 70 countries. More than 5 billion people—almost 75 percent of the world’s population—live in a country that has received a grant.

Bloomberg Philanthropies Announces Mayors Challenge Winners Providence, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, and Santa Monica

Bloomberg Philanthropies today announced the winners of the Mayors Challenge, a competition to inspire American cities to generate innovative ideas that solve major challenges and improve city life – and that ultimately can be shared with other cities to improve the well-being of the nation. More than 300 cities competed in this inaugural competition. Providence was presented the Mayors Challenge Grand Prize for Innovation and a $5 million implementation award for its cutting-edge early education initiative. Mayors Challenge innovation prizes also were awarded to Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, and Santa Monica, all of which will receive $1 million to support implementation. Sculptures created by world-renowned designer Olafur Eliasson were created to commemorate the Mayors Challenge winners.
