Bloomberg Philanthropies Partners with the Government of India to Encourage Smarter Urban Development that Improves People’s Lives

Bloomberg Philanthropies detailed its partnership with the Government of India in support of the Smart Cities Mission, one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious urban development programs to improve quality of life in India’s fast-growing urban centers. Bloomberg Philanthropies is providing strategic and technical support in the design and delivery of a Smart Cities Challenge, through which central government will select 100 cities over the next three years to receive funding. The foundation also will provide support for cities to develop more innovative and impactful proposals. Bloomberg Philanthropies is leveraging both its expertise in designing large scale competitions for cities and its deep urban policy expertise and network to support the success of the Smart Cities Mission.

Bloomberg Philanthropies Selects Four U.S. Cities to Receive Up to $1 Million Each in Funding for Public Art Projects

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced four cities selected to receive up to $1 million each as part of the Public Art Challenge, a new program aimed at supporting temporary public art projects that engage communities, enhance creativity, and enrich the vibrancy of cities. The cities selected are: Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, NY, which proposed a collaborative project; as well as Gary, IN, Los Angeles, CA and Spartanburg, SC.

Global Cities Inc. Positioned for Expansion in Warsaw

Global Cities Inc., a Program of Bloomberg Philanthropies, is positioned for expansion in Warsaw after its successful launch of Global Scholars, the international e-classroom. A three-school pilot program took place during the 2014-2015 school year with the endorsement of Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz. Officials of Global Cities, Inc. met with principals and teachers from 26 Warsaw schools about offering this digital initiative in additional classrooms. The meeting was hosted by Joanna Gospodarczyk, Director of the Warsaw Bureau of Education, at the Warsaw Centre for Socio-Educational Innovation and Training.

Bloomberg Philanthropies Boosts Investment in Sierra Club to Retire U.S. Coal Fleet & Transition the Nation towards Clean Energy Sources

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced it will invest an additional $30 million in the Sierra Club to secure the replacement of half the nation’s coal fleet by 2017 with clean energy. The new round of funding builds on a previous commitment of $50 million, raising the foundation’s overall investment in the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign to $80 million. This adds to the successful, state-driven and community-based strategy that has made it possible for the U.S. to become a world leader in aggressive emission reductions.

Bloomberg Philanthropies Launches $100 Million Data for Health Program in Developing Countries

Bloomberg Philanthropies, in partnership with the Australian government, is launching Data for Health, a $100 million initiative that will enable 20 low- and middle-income countries to vastly improve public health data collection.  Each year the World Health Organization estimates that 65% of all deaths worldwide – 35 million each year – go unrecorded. Millions more deaths lack a documented cause. This gap in data creates major obstacles for understanding and addressing public health problems. The Data for Health initiative seeks to provide governments, aid organizations, and public health leaders with tools and systems to better collect data – and use it to prioritize health challenges, develop policies, deploy resources, and measure success.

Bloomberg Philanthropies & The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Launch Anti-Tobacco Trade Litigation Fund

Bloomberg & Bill Gates today announced the launch of the Anti-Tobacco Trade Litigation Fund, a new joint effort to combat the tobacco industry’s use of international trade agreements to threaten and prevent countries from passing strong tobacco-control laws. Backed by Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the new support for low and middle-income countries is the most recent element in a comprehensive strategy to reduce tobacco use globally. Tobacco will claim 1 billion lives in this century unless urgent action is taken.
