Eighteen Countries Have Partnered with Bloomberg Philanthropies’ $100M Data for Health Initiative

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced partnerships with the first 18 countries that will receive critical technical assistance and catalytic funding for new tools and systems to help nations gather accurate data about the health of their citizens. Launched in partnership  with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade just over one year ago, Data for Health is a four-year, $100 million initiative aimed at improving health data in low- and middle-income countries spanning Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America. The first 18 partner countries, reaching nearly one billion people, in the Data for Health program include.

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced the 20 Latin American and Caribbean cities selected as finalists in its 2016 Mayors Challenge, a competition that encourages cities to generate bold ideas that solve urban challenges and improve city life – and have potential to spread.  The finalists, hailing from 10 countries, will move forward to compete for a 5 million USD grand prize and four 1 million USD awards, as well as extensive implementation support. The ideas reflect creative new approaches to some of the most pressing issues facing cities in the region, including mobility, youth unemployment, waste management, obesity, and social and economic inclusion for immigrants and people with disabilities.

Results for America announced 12 new cities selected to join the national What Works Cities initiative, supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies. The addition of the new cities demonstrates the growing interest by local government leaders to use data and evidence to make better decisions and improve results for city residents. Additionally, Results for America and other What Works Cities partners released a toolkit of resources to support cities’ work in the areas of open data, performance management, low-cost evaluations, and results-driven contracting.

A new research report series Green Finance for Low-Carbon Cities, authored by the Paulson Institute, Energy Foundation China and the Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association, estimates that 6.6 trillion RMB ($1 trillion) will be required over the next five years to build low-carbon cities in China. This includes investments in efficient buildings, low-carbon transportation and clean energy in Chinese cities. The research is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Green Finance Committee of China Society for Banking and Finance and is part of an initiative that aims to develop innovative financing solutions to support sustainable urbanization in China.

In addition, the symposium was attended by educators from Barcelona, London, and Warsaw.

Bloomberg Philanthropies released the results of a poll that examined the attitudes of voters toward the Clean Power Plan (CPP) in four key states: Florida, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin. In each of these states, attorneys general have sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to block the CPP from being enacted. However, the polling found widespread support for the CPP and concretely showed that attorneys general Brad Schimel (WI), Pam Bondi (FL), Bill Schuette (MI), and Chris Koster (MO) are out of step with their constituents. Additionally, the poll found that the majority of voters in Florida, Michigan and Wisconsin, and a plurality of Missouri voters, were more likely to vote for a presidential candidate who also supported the plan.
