Twelve Cities Join What Works Cities, Expanding Wave of Local Government Leaders Accelerating Their Use of Data and Evidence to Improve Lives

Results for America announced 12 new cities selected to join the national What Works Cities initiative, supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies. The addition of the new cities demonstrates the growing interest by local government leaders to use data and evidence to make better decisions and improve results for city residents. Additionally, Results for America and other What Works Cities partners released a toolkit of resources to support cities’ work in the areas of open data, performance management, low-cost evaluations, and results-driven contracting.

A new research report series Green Finance for Low-Carbon Cities, authored by the Paulson Institute, Energy Foundation China and the Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association, estimates that 6.6 trillion RMB ($1 trillion) will be required over the next five years to build low-carbon cities in China. This includes investments in efficient buildings, low-carbon transportation and clean energy in Chinese cities. The research is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Green Finance Committee of China Society for Banking and Finance and is part of an initiative that aims to develop innovative financing solutions to support sustainable urbanization in China.

The innovation and urban policy experts, largely from Latin America and the Caribbean, will help select 20 finalists and eventual prize winners based on their idea’s vision, potential for impact, implementation plan, and potential to spread to other cities.

Global Cities, Inc. Convenes Representatives from Over 20 U.S. School Districts and Educators from Europe to Promote Early Global Digital Education

Twenty-five U.S. school districts from 16 states participated in a symposium on global digital education convened by Global Cities, Inc., a program of Bloomberg Philanthropies. More than 20 of the school districts were from the largest school districts in the U.S. including New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, Ft. Lauderdale and Houston. In addition, the symposium was attended by educators from Barcelona, London, and Warsaw.

Bloomberg Philanthropies released the results of a poll that examined the attitudes of voters toward the Clean Power Plan (CPP) in four key states: Florida, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin. In each of these states, attorneys general have sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to block the CPP from being enacted. However, the polling found widespread support for the CPP and concretely showed that attorneys general Brad Schimel (WI), Pam Bondi (FL), Bill Schuette (MI), and Chris Koster (MO) are out of step with their constituents. Additionally, the poll found that the majority of voters in Florida, Michigan and Wisconsin, and a plurality of Missouri voters, were more likely to vote for a presidential candidate who also supported the plan.

The biennial seeks to call attention to water and sustainability as well as act as a cultural experience for visitors. The biennial, titled, Current:LA Water was chosen as one of four grantees in Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Public Art Challenge, which provides funding of up to $1 million for public art and aims to demonstrate the power of culture to advance civic priorities.

Spartanburg City Council on Monday night approved design concepts for a $1M public art project that will light up neighborhoods later this year. The funding is provided by Bloomberg Philanthropies. In 2015, the City of Spartanburg was selected as one of four cities nationwide to take part in Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge, a new program to support temporary public art projects that celebrate creativity, enhance urban identity, encourage public-private partnerships, and drive economic development.

3 Mayors Unveil Breathing Lights Events and Announce Competition for Local Artists

Mayors Kathy Sheehan (Albany), Gary McCarthy (Schenectady), and Patrick Madden (Troy) gathered at the rehabilitated former St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church on Eastern Avenue in Schenectady to announce a full list of neighborhood engagement activities for the Breathing Lights temporary public art project – and call for submissions to a new, local arts competition. Breathing Lights, winner of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge, will illuminate hundreds of vacant buildings in Albany, Schenectady and Troy nightly in October and November 2016.
