Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Commonwealth Secretariat to Explore Joint Initiatives In Support of International Trade, Innovation and Sustainability

Bloomberg Philanthropies and The Commonwealth Secretariat today announced the signing of a multi-year agreement to explore a number of mutually supportive joint initiatives to aid international trade, innovation and sustainability.
Signed during the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in London this week, the agreement will see both parties seek to collaborate on areas of common interest, by leveraging their experiences, resources and networks.

The American Talent Initiative (ATI), a Bloomberg Philanthropies initiative led by the Aspen Institute’s College Excellence Program and Ithaka S+R, announced that its membership has reached 100 top colleges and universities working collectively toward the goal of enrolling 50,000 additional talented, low- and moderate-income students at colleges and universities with strong graduation rates by 2025.

At the Bloomberg New Energy Finance Summit in New York City, UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Bloomberg Philanthropies founder Michael R. Bloomberg joined the United Kingdom Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth Claire Perry, and Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna, to discuss the new partnership.

Bloomberg Philanthropies released the results of its 2018 American Mayors Survey, the largest and most comprehensive survey of mayors to date. The survey reveals that America’s mayors increasingly feel on the hook for addressing major policy and funding issues – from infrastructure to immigration – that were once under the purview of federal or state governments. At the same time, more mayors say that their relationship with the new administration has gotten worse over the past year. The research also provides a deep examination of how local leaders are responding to climate change and the opioid epidemic as well as the degree to which mayors rely on experimentation, partnership, and citizen engagement as central strategies to improve their community.

Michael R. Bloomberg and Bloomberg Philanthropies today announced it would provide US$20 million in funding to launch Stopping Tobacco Organizations and Products (STOP), a new global watchdog that will aggressively monitor deceptive tobacco industry tactics and practices to undermine public health.
STOP will function as a robust global monitoring system that complements existing efforts in identifying industry deception. The watchdog will deliver regular reports detailing tactics and strategies both at global and country-level and will provide tools and training materials for countries to combat Big Tobacco’s influence. STOP will also liaise with existing Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced today the appointment of Michael R. Bloomberg of the United States as his Special Envoy for Climate Action.
Michael R. Bloomberg will support the Secretary-General’s climate strategy and efforts toward the planned 2019 Climate Summit at UN Headquarters. The 2019 Climate Summit will mobilize stronger and more ambitious action towards 2020 climate targets. The Special Envoy will leverage efforts in key areas of the Climate Summit to encourage rapid and enhanced implementation of the Paris Agreement in the context of sustainable development.
