The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM), the largest international alliance of city leaders and their networks committed to raising the global ambition for climate action, announced today a new partnership with Google and Bloomberg Philanthropies. The partnership channels Google’s proprietary data and technological capabilities through GCoM’s global network of cities and city networks together with Bloomberg Philanthropies’ leadership on cities and climate change to drive global action at the local level. These efforts will provide cities with critical information about their environmental data and develop new tools that will empower cities to access new city-level climate data, yield significant cost and time savings, and drive ambition to meet the Paris Agreement.

During the week of the 73rd UN General Assembly in New York, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres tapped Michael R. Bloomberg, the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action, to lead an initiative that will support a global mobilization of private capital in response to the challenge of climate change. The Climate Finance Leadership Initiative will work to fulfill the private financing objectives included in the landmark Paris Agreement, which reaffirmed the goal of mobilizing at least $100 billion per year by 2020 through a combination of public development finance and private foreign direct investment.

Today, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Climate Action and former New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg joined Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan in Seattle’s Kerry Park to announce Seattle and Atlanta as the first round of winning cities for the Bloomberg American Cities Climate Challenge. The Bloomberg American Cities Climate Challenge is a $70 million dollar program that will accelerate 20 ambitious cities’ efforts to tackle climate change and promote a sustainable future for residents. Through the Climate Challenge – which is part of Bloomberg’s American Cities Initiative, a suite of more than $200 million in investments to strengthen city halls and advance critical policies – Seattle and Atlanta are accepted into a two-year acceleration program, will be provided powerful new resources and access to cutting-edge support to help meet or beat the cities’ near-term carbon reduction goals.

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced that the University of Bath, The Global Centre for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC), and International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) have been selected to collectively direct a new global tobacco industry watchdog group: STOP (Stopping Tobacco Organizations and Products). With partners based in the UK, Thailand and France, the global watchdog will publish investigative reports detailing the tobacco industry’s lobbying tactics and marketing strategies, and will provide tools and training materials for low- and middle-income countries to push back against the industry’s influence.
