Bloomberg Philanthropies, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and Johns Hopkins University announced a joint effort to fund research into the potential therapeutic uses of COVID-19 convalescent plasma, led by Arturo Casadevall, an infectious disease expert and Bloomberg Distinguished Professor who holds joint appointments in the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

More than 500 mayors, local leaders, and members of city response teams from cities across the United States joined Bloomberg Philanthropies’ second virtual COVID-19 Local Response Initiative convening where President Bill Clinton and Michael Bloomberg addressed the mayors about the challenges associated with the pandemic. Joined by Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein, MD, the Vice Dean for Public Health Practice and Community Engagement for the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University and director of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative, and Dr. Tom Frieden, president and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives and former director of the Center for Disease Control, Mr. Bloomberg and President Clinton highlighted the leading role that mayors have in responding to the crisis.

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced a new set of supports for U.S. cities to help them better understand how to access and track the Federal programs and funding mechanisms that are available to support their COVID-19 response and recovery. Specifically, this program will highlight established best practices and provide tutorials on how to apply for and receive aid, and also monitor expenses while ensuring proper accounting. These new supports will be delivered through a partnership with the United States Conference of Mayors and is part of Bloomberg Philanthropies COVID-19 Local Response Initiative.

Just days after Mike Bloomberg launched a program to help American mayors improve their coronavirus response, Bloomberg Philanthropies today announced additional actions and funding to combat the pandemic on a global scale. The new $40 million global initiative will support immediate action to prevent or slow the spread of COVID-19 in vulnerable low- and middle-income countries. Bloomberg Philanthropies will partner with the global health organization Vital Strategies on global response efforts, along with the World Health Organization (WHO), to support lower income countries and cities respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Building on the success of 12 years of investment, Bloomberg Philanthropies today announced a doubling of its support for global road safety, committing another $240 million from 2020 – 2025 to save 600,000 more lives and prevent up to 22 million injuries in low- and middle-income countries around the world. The six-year reinvestment in the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety is expected to double its impact to date. Since 2007, the initiative has saved an estimated 312,000 lives and prevented up to 11.5 million injuries. The reinvestment also includes a new awards competition to shine a light on low- and middle-income countries that have made exemplary progress in road safety.
