President George W. Bush Joins Mike Bloomberg to Address More Than 200 Cities at Third Virtual Convening to Support Local Coronavirus Response

More than 600 participants including mayors, local leaders, and members of city response teams from cities across the United States joined Bloomberg Philanthropies’ third virtual COVID-19 Local Response Initiative convening on April 2, where President George W. Bush and Michael Bloomberg addressed the mayors about the challenges associated with the pandemic. Joined by Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein, MD, the Vice Dean for Public Health Practice and Community Engagement for the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University and director of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative, Mr. Bloomberg and President Bush highlighted the leading role that mayors have in responding to the crisis.

As part of Bloomberg Philanthropies’ newly announced Global Coronavirus Response Initiative, more than 65 leaders and technical staff from 31 cities around the world joined the first-ever Partnership for Healthy Cities COVID-19 Response Webinar. The virtual convening focused on the fundamentals of epidemic preparedness and response, the latest COVID-19 science, and how the Partnership will assist the cities in tackling COVID-19 by providing tools and technical resources geared toward urban contexts. The work complements Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Coronavirus Local Response Initiative, which began convening American mayors two weeks ago.

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced a new set of supports for U.S. cities to help them better understand how to access and track the Federal programs and funding mechanisms that are available to support their COVID-19 response and recovery. Specifically, this program will highlight established best practices and provide tutorials on how to apply for and receive aid, and also monitor expenses while ensuring proper accounting. These new supports will be delivered through a partnership with the United States Conference of Mayors and is part of Bloomberg Philanthropies COVID-19 Local Response Initiative.

Just days after Mike Bloomberg launched a program to help American mayors improve their coronavirus response, Bloomberg Philanthropies today announced additional actions and funding to combat the pandemic on a global scale. The new $40 million global initiative will support immediate action to prevent or slow the spread of COVID-19 in vulnerable low- and middle-income countries. Bloomberg Philanthropies will partner with the global health organization Vital Strategies on global response efforts, along with the World Health Organization (WHO), to support lower income countries and cities respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
