Wind and Solar Top 10% of Global Power Generation for First Time

The world’s wind and solar projects combined to meet more than a tenth of global electricity demand for the first time in 2022, according to research company BloombergNEF (BNEF). At the same time overall electricity demand, production from coal-fired power plants, and emissions all surged in 2021 as the global economy regained its footing following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bloomberg Philanthropies hosted the third virtual convening for mayors as part of the Local Infrastructure Hub: Support for U.S. Cities and Towns to Put Federal Funding to Work for Residents. Michael R. Bloomberg, Founder of Bloomberg LP and Bloomberg Philanthropies and the 108th mayor of New York City, was joined by Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer Granholm. The Hub is a national program, launched in July, to ensure that all cities and towns can access funding from the $1 trillion Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to drive local recovery, improve communities, and deliver results for residents.

The expansion would reduce the number of Londoners living in areas exceeding interim Word Health Organization (WHO) targets for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) by 13 percent. This would improve air quality for 340,000 people including 87,000 children, 50,000 older people and 145 schools.
