Marjorie B. Tiven Named to Advisory Board of the United Nations Democracy Fund

Marjorie B. Tiven, Director of Global Cities, Inc. a program of Bloomberg Philanthropies, was named to the Advisory Board of the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.

The United Nations Democracy Fund distributes cash grants to civil society organizations to strengthen democratic governments in countries around the world. It is financed by donations from more than 40 UN member states, including middle- and low-income countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Projects range from creating democratic media cultures, cultivating national and grass roots women leaders, implementing conventions against corruption in emerging democracies, and capacity building to participate in government.

By working with civil society, the Fund complements the United Nations’ traditional work with national governments.

UNDEF Advisory Board members include the Fund’s seven largest UN member state contributors; six member states reflecting commitment to democratic principles, as well as geographical diversity; two civil society organizations; and three individuals.

Global Cities, Inc. is a program of Bloomberg Philanthropies that connects global cities worldwide through an information-sharing network and supports global awareness for the next generation through cross-national interactive education initiatives. Marjorie B. Tiven was New York City Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs from 2002 through 2013.
