Meeting our Paris Climate Agreement goals without federal action

The White House announced this week that they will once again pull the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement.

In response, Mike once again pledged that Bloomberg Philanthropies and other U.S. climate funders would step up to fulfill America’s commitments under the Agreement, and reaffirmed his support for climate progress through local action and other measures outside the federal government.

Ten years after the 2015 signing of the Paris Climate Agreement, the goals it set are more important than ever.

Watch for more

“More and more Americans have had their lives torn apart by climate-fueled disasters, like the destructive fires raging in California. At the same time, the United States is experiencing the economic benefits of clean energy, as costs have fallen and jobs have grown in both red and blue states,” said Mike, announcing the resumed commitment to supporting our Paris goals. “The American people remain determined to continue the fight against the devastating effects of climate change.”

The actions of mayors, governors, community leaders, businesses, and other non-federal U.S. institutions will be critical in the years ahead. Recent research shows that local climate efforts have the potential to cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 62 percent in the next decade. Even without federal leadership, that progress could significantly contribute to — and possibly meet — the nation’s climate target of 61 to 66 percent emissions reductions by 2035.

A key driver in reaching those goals will be the America is All In coalition, originally launched as America’s Pledge following the first U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement in 2017, and now the most extensive and diverse group of U.S. leaders ever assembled in support of climate action.
