Protecting the Ocean

As a natural carbon sink, the ocean is uniquely impacted by global warming and the human activity that causes it. Excess carbon pollution from burning fossil fuels is resulting in unprecedented temperatures and high levels of acidification in our world’s ocean. At the same time, illegal and unsustainable fishing practices have devastated coral and marine populations, threatening both aquatic habitats and the communities that rely upon them. At stake are the lives and livelihoods of more than 3 billion people around the world.

Ensuring the health of our ocean requires protection against the inevitable long-term impacts of climate change as well as the immediate threats of pollution and overfishing. By collaborating with world-class research organizations, advocacy partners and local governments from top fishing and coral reef nations around the world, Bloomberg Philanthropies is working to ensure the ocean, key marine ecosystems and the billions who depend on them can survive and thrive.

Bloomberg Ocean Initiative

The Bloomberg Ocean Initiative is working to protect and preserve ocean ecosystems by collaborating with a global network of partners to advance evidence-based conservation practices. Launched in 2014, the initiative works to increase fishing transparency, end illegal practices at sea, and protect coral reefs – especially those with the greatest ability to withstand the devastating effects of climate change. By leveraging data, the Bloomberg Ocean Initiative also shapes and advocates for national policies that protect and strengthen the resilience of our ocean and its many contributions to life on this planet.
