BNEF RESEARCH SHOWED REGIONAL INVESTMENT IN LOW-CARBON ENERGY IS SHORT OF NET-ZERO PATH

Staying on track for net-zero emissions requires at least $4 dollars to be spent on low-carbon energy supply for every dollar that goes to fossil fuels throughout this decade. BloombergNEF’s latest “Energy Supply Investment for Net Zero: Regional Ratios” report shows that globally, the energy transition is moving in the right direction, albeit slowly with 1:1 fossil fuel to low carbon supply investment ratio in 2022 (up from around 0.5:1 in 2015 – the year the Paris Agreement started). However, this is not aligned to a 1.5C and net-zero trajectory and currently no regions are on track to align with the required ratios. The report further outlines investments required at a regional level and notes that the key differences in levels of investment are a result of the presence or absence of existing energy supply resources and associated government policies, resulting in differing starting points when it comes to investment requirements.
