Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities
Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities
Data shows that people living in areas with struggling economies face the worst air, water, and weather impacts, and rising disaster costs threaten their health, resilience, and economic growth. U.S. cities have an opportunity to take action at the local level to combat harmful pollution and improve millions of lives.
Launched in March 2024, Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities is a three-year initiative that helps 25 U.S. cities take bold action to achieve safer and more prosperous communities, particularly in areas where health, infrastructure, and economic outcomes can be improved.
Building on the longtime leadership of U.S. cities to confront pollution, the $200 million Bloomberg Philanthropies initiative will provide deep support to selected cities to pursue transformative solutions in the buildings and transportation sectors.
The initiative aims to ensure the participating cities – collectively representing over 10 million people – can leverage resources to strengthen local leadership and unlock their potential to build cleaner, more resilient, and economically thriving communities.
The cities selected for Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities will receive support from Bloomberg Philanthropies to bolster capacity in city halls to drive local action on pollution reduction and unlock wealth-building opportunities. Potential projects in the 25 cities include developing affordable energy-efficient housing, increasing access to reliable American-made energy, investing in clean air and water, improving infrastructure, creating jobs, and more.
This initiative builds on Bloomberg Philanthropies’ commitment to supporting cities in reducing pollution and creating economic opportunity.
